Directed by Elizabeth Way, Broken River is a new dramatic piece of writing, an offering for the stage. 

 

Broken River discusses topical, contemporary, and social themes current and relevant to the broader humanitarian fabric. Broken River taps into exciting, raw conversations of great interest to audiences through the powerful medium of theatre.

 

When a mother’s love is not enough to solve long-standing sibling rivalry between two brothers, elder abuse, and powers of attorney, you have a Broken River.

 

There's always history - before Broken River, a little unknown one-act play called Separating The Dust born three characters named Chad, Michael, and Tracey.

 

The storyline of when a Mother's love is not enough, but she never quits attempting to dissolve her children's sibling rivalry. The two brothers have to work together to sort out their Mother's Final Will and Testament.

 

Separating The Dust brought much excitement to the 2010 Victorian Drama League One Act Play Festival.

 

Separating The Dust stimulated audiences with the drama and created its own momentum. Newspaper and radio stations expressed interest in the show. The 20-25 minute drama was refused by some festivals, respectfully citing the type of play was not suitable for their audience demographic.

 

Separating The Dust caused so much interest, we were invited to perform ahead of the Shorter+Sweeter one-act play touring show, promoting their upcoming festival.

 

Separating The Dust didn't go unnoticed on the circuit, winning three awards during the Victorian Drama League One Act Play Festival, including best production.

 

A very positive experience was Separating The Dust, with a brilliant production, gaining the interest of audiences and the media, alike.

 

Broken River

 

From Separating The Dust, Broken River was born.

 

Broken River is a full-length drama performed at the 2023 Melbourne Fringe Festival.

​

Broken River rises above the Phoenix out of an award-winning one-act play, Separating The Dust which tells the story of a dysfunctional family, sibling rivalry, and a mother’s love on trial, and failing.

 

Born from two true-life stories culminating in family disruption after a parent passes. When tempers flare, love is on trial, and nothing can quell the years of underlying sibling rivalry.

 

Broken River tells the story of the Morris household, where the love of family was never ceded, yet ego rises up to take power.

Period

This play is set in the modern day. Early summer.


Location

The location of this play is situated in a large metropolitan city.
In an area renowned for a strong mix of purpose-built and social housing, the location houses those families and individuals who financially struggle and are often kept in the eyes of the law.


In the social housing dwelling of Mrs Virginia Morris, the kitchen is basic, the lounge is out of date and tired and the general look and feel of the living areas are unkempt.


Relationships

Virginia is the mother to Chad and Michael. Chad is the eldest child and Michael is the youngest of the family. Their Father passed away a number of years ago due to prostate cancer.


Tracey and Chad are married; they have two boys of their own named Charlie and Ricky. Charlie is the eldest child and Ricky is the youngest of the family.


Michael and Frank are long-term lovers and have been in a very happy relationship, until recently.
